There has been a new research connecting the role of mitochondria in fibromyalgia patients

Mitochondria:

All living organisms are built from cells. In some cases, a single cell constitutes an entire organism. Cells contain genetic material (DNA and RNA) and organelles they carry out essential functions, such as metabolism, energy production and protein synthesis.

Mitochondria are found in the cells of every complex organism.  They produce about 90% of the chemical energy that cells need to survive.

Mitochondria do much more than just produce energy, they also produce chemicals that your body needs for other purposes, break down waste products so they’re less harmful, and recycle some of those waste products to save energy.

Fibromyalgia and mitochondria:

The link between FM and mitochondria is a new subject only recently researched.

How does it work?

Pain in FM is associated with muscular change and mitochondrial disturbance or abnormalities, including oxidative stress, have been observed in patients with FM.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): CoQ10 a potent antioxidant and is an essential electron carrier in the mitochondria. CoQ10 deficiency alters mitochondria function and increased reactive oxygen species generation (free radicals/oxidative stress).

Recent research shows CoQ10 deficiency in blood mononuclear cells in FM patients, so the hypothesis that mitochondrial dysfunction is the origin of oxidative stress and oxidative stress is implicated in FM. Oxidative stress also causes inflammation which exacerbates FM further.

Ribose in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue: subjects in a FM/chronic fatigue study have shown improvements with ribose supplementation.
Improvements began in the first week of treatment and continued increasing through to the end of the 3 weeks of treatment.

D-ribose treatment demonstrated highly clinically significant improvements (p<.0001) in the following categories

  • 61.3% increase in energy

  • 37% increase in overall well being

  • 30% improvement in sleep

  • 30% improvement in mental focus and clarity.

  • 15% decrease in pain
