So we all know water is an essential part of life, we need about 2litres per day on average and this changes depending on size and activity i.e. if your petite you may need less and if your really active you may need more etc…
But why should we avoid drinking water or anything else while eating?
So to understand this you need to understand the digestive system a little.
When we eat food our food travels down the throat to the stomach and this is where we make hydrochloric acid or HCL.
One of HCL’s main functions is to digest food especially proteins (amino acids) and some vitamins and minerals like iron and B12.
HCL depends on a few things to work efficiently firstly it needs heat when we eat our body creates thermogenesis which is a fancy name for heat, for HCL to work effectively it also needs to be concentrated not diluted and ingesting other liquids dilutes our HCl.
So If we are drinking water when we eat it reduces heat and reduces our HCL concentration.
This leads to reduced digestion meaning the food can sit for longer and this can cause bloating and discomfort for more information on bloating go to http://samanthah22.sg-host.com/blog/bloating
